Today’s work, Exception, was written based on the core theories of the German political theorist Carl Schmitt: the Sovereign and the State of Exception. Schmitt defined the sovereign as "he who decides on the exception." This means that the true master is the one with the absolute decisiveness to suspend normal rules and declare a state of emergency. This project visualizes the moments of absolute power navigating the boundaries of the law, set against a control room filled with numerous monitors and cold, mechanical systems.
In the video, the walls of monitors represent the eyes of world surveillance, and the key in Luna's hand symbolizes the power to open and close the system's boundaries. While she appears to be within the prison system, she is not bound by its rules; instead, she occupies a position that operates and suspends those very rules. The stark contrast between the red warning lights and the cold blue lighting visualizes the urgency of her decisions, projecting the image of an absolute sovereign who becomes the law herself and declares the exception.
The line "I don’t follow the code... I am the code" in the lyrics is a declaration of the essence of Schmitt’s philosophy. Furthermore, the repeating cry of State of Exception demonstrates the overwhelming charisma of a designer who halts the existing order to establish a new sovereign will.
The face of the true master revealed only when the rules vanish. Following the gaze of the designer who paused the system to become the code itself, I hope you feel the energy of subjective decisiveness that breaks the frames of daily life. I wish you a time of pleasant contemplation.
